Gas Turbine Engines: Turboshaft Solution
Handling Challenging Installation Procedure; Offering Weight and Space Savings
A turboshaft engine is often used when a sustained high power output, high reliability, small size, and light weight are required such as in helicopters and hovercraft. Whereas the sealing solutions offered by Saint-Gobain Seals on large turbofan engines are mostly static, the situation with turboshaft engines is quite different but just as critical. Our OmniSeal® product line (PTFE rotary lip seals) offers exceptional sealing control in dynamic applications with speeds to 40 m/sec and even more in special cases that need design engineering, research and development.
Using OmniSeal® lip seals on turboshaft engines for all accessory connections and also on the main output power shaft helps customers reach the following goals:
- Simplifying sealing solution installation vs. carbon or magnetic seals
- Eliminating some weight
- Allowing more compact design of the engine
Saint-Gobain Seals has been supplying sealing solutions for helicopter turboshaft engines for many years; they are still qualified and being used today on most of the popular engine programs. This is due to our capacity for designing custom, precise fit solutions to pair with existing or new hardware. Along with the helicopter turboshaft, we have also helped helicopter customers with demanding assemblies such as main gearbox and rotor head using our OmniSeal® spring-energized seals, which act as a system solution complement to our lip seals.
