Saint-Gobain Seals' Meldin® 5000 Series Qualified as Backup Ring in Down Hole Drilling Application

Saint-Gobain Seals' Meldin® 5000 series offering has been selected for packing kit backup rings for a down hole drilling application in the oil and gas market. The Meldin® 5000 series based on polyetheretherketone (PEEK) belongs to the Meldin® HT product family, which includes other high performance, polymer-based custom thermoplastic solutions. The backup ring parts are used in a hydraulic drilling jar that helps free and move the drill pipe components in the event that they become stuck in the formation.
The drilling jar is versatile and operated on land, offshore or ultra-hot boreholes. For this high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) drilling application where temperature can rise up to 500°F and the system pressure in thousands of PSI, the back up ring parts provide excellent durability through superior thermal resistance combined with strong mechanical properties and chemical resistance.
The Meldin® HT product family complements another Saint-Gobain Seals' polymer product line, Meldin® 7000 series, a high-performance thermoset polyimide material. Having these two product lines allow the company to meet their customers’ needs for a diverse range of high-temperature and high-performance engineered polymer solutions.
