The number of actuators used on an aircraft is quite impressive and are all critical components that contribute to make flights as safe as possible.
This is true for all actuators regardless of the category they belong to: primary or secondary flight control equipment. Even though the vast majority of the market is still using hydraulic-powered actuators, the market is currently undergoing a major technology change with the adoption of electro-hydraulic (EHA) or fully electrical (EMA) equipment.
This evolution is changing the requirements for sealing solutions being used, and our OmniSeal® PTFE seals are a perfect fit, fulfilling new requirements by offering extremely long life, low friction (to limit electrical power consumption), dry running and stable performance whatever the operating temperature. In comparison to conventional elastomer or elastomer energized polymer seals, these seals do not take compression set at low temperatures and wear less against HVOF coated hardware surfaces. If our OmniSeal® product is a good solution for low friction reciprocating applications, our OmniLip® product also provides the same level of performance for rotary shaft applications such as the critical horizontal stabilizer trim actuator (HSTA).
Advances provided by Saint-Gobain Seals in design and material solutions help to build confidence over life time of the equipment as well as easy integration.
