Saint-Gobain Seals’ presence in the propulsion systems of rocket engines can be found in various equipment: cryogenic, butterfly, anti-blow out and POGO valves along the fluid lines and joints, liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen turbo-pumps and injectors, and manifolds and ducts.
Sealing function in these systems is critical since very low leakage is allowed; leakage translates to increased risk of explosion with fluids such as liquid oxygen being easily ignitable. What makes Saint-Gobain Seals a well- known and respected technical partner within the industry is the ability to provide very low leakage in harsh environments with cryogenic temperatures and pressures that can go from ambient to high (10-15,000 psi or 690-1035 bar). Our OmniSeal® product, especially the RACO® design configuration, has proven to be the most reliable and effective sealing solution in these situations.
We also supply propulsion system manufacturers with polymer components such as bushings made with our Meldin® 7000 product. This lightweight polyimide material has good mechanical integrity even at cryogenic temperatures, is compatible when in contact with fluids and replaces metal bushings.
OmniSeal® seals are also used in gimbals, which are structural parts that support the rocket engines during engine operation. The sealing elements inside the gimbals need to cope with the rotary movement and high torque that these components experience and still deliver low wear and friction, ensuring lifetime confidence to the whole system.
