Saint-Gobain Seals Equips the Renault ZOE’s Brake System July 9, 2013
Saint-Gobain Seals has co-developed with Bosch Automotive, one of the automotive industry’s leading manufacturers, a series of high-tech polymer components used in the brake system of the Renault ZOE. The latest version of the electric car debuted in France at the end of 2012, prior to its European rollout in March 2013. The components include four precision parts (fitting rings, spring seat, collector pipe and magnet support) and were custom-built using multi-cavity tools and dedicated injection-molding at the Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics plant in Agoncillo, La Rioja, Spain. These parts are used in a unit that recreates the sensations produced by classic car brake pedals as the brake operation in electrical and hybrid cars are different from standard cars equipped with combustion engines.
The materials used for the parts are engineered polymers with outstanding characteristics in temperature resistance, stress and working environment conditions. The high-quality level of manufacturing capabilities and high-performance polymer materials were key aspects in having Saint-Gobain Seals requested and nominated for this development project. In the mid-term, the manufacturing output of this type of equipment should increase to support the market growth for hybrid and electric vehicles.
Throughout Renault’s 115 years of history, the brand has shown its ability to innovate and to bring technology within everybody's reach; ZOE is the emblem of Renault's strategic plan - Drive the Change 2016 - and the spearhead of the Renault Z.E. range.
